Maastricht University celebrates 50th anniversary together with city and region

Maastricht University is celebrating its 50th anniversary. What began in 1976 as a small medical faculty has grown into an international university with students, staff and partners from all over the world. And we’re not celebrating this milestone alone, but together with the city of Maastricht and the region.

Our jubilee year UM50 is all about connection: between university and city, between science and society, and above all between people. With a varied programme of events and stories, Maastricht University also invites local residents, organisations and visitors to join the celebrations and help us shape our future.

Events and stories

Today we are kicking off our jubilee year with the official Dies Natalis in the Basilica of Saint Servatius, attended by His Majesty King Willem-Alexander. The ceremony can also be followed via livestream.

Over the course of the year, a wide range of events and activities will take place in Maastricht and the surrounding region. These include ‘50 hours of festivities’ at the Tapijn site and a special jubilee edition of the PAS Festival, as well as lectures and walks. This jubilee website brings together events and jubilee stories and will be updated regularly throughout the year.

Are you a staff member, a student, an alum or a resident of the city or region? You are warmly invited to celebrate UM50 with us!

Join UM50

Under the banner of Join UM50, UM is making funding available this year for initiatives that strengthen the connection between the university and society. Residents, organisations and partnerships with a good idea and a UM contact person can apply for a contribution of up to €5,000 before 1 March. Check out the selection criteria and application form.

Events that align with the jubilee year can also be included in the UM50 events calendar. Organisers can register their event by email.
