Guided Tour of the Special Collections of the University Library (Dutch)

Universiteitsbibliotheek, Maastricht
15:00 - 16:00
Free

Programme

The underground repository of the University Library at Grote Looiersstraat 17 houses a treasure trove of historical works in philosophy, history, anatomy, literature, theology, law, and various social sciences. The core of these Special Collections is formed by the renowned Jesuit Library, originating from various monasteries and seminaries, including the former Maastricht Jesuit Monastery (Canisianum) at Tongersestraat 53. The oldest books date back to the late fifteenth century.

Curator Odin Essers will gladly show you some highlights, including a medieval manuscript, a hand-colored atlas by the famous cartographer Gerard Mercator from 1628, the personal prayer book of Louis Napoleon, and a collection of beautifully illustrated fairy tale books from the early 20th century. Odin Essers will also be happy to tell you about the background and content of the Special Collections and how the library is working on their visibility, usability, and sustainability. An exclusive look behind the vault door!
