As curator of Maastricht University's academic heritage, Bart Zwegers researches the history of the university, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
What began in 1976 as a small medical faculty in the far corner of the Netherlands – but at the heart of Europe – has grown into an international knowledge community. In this Studium Generale lecture, Bart Zwegers uses various objects to guide you through the origins of the university, its developments over the past 50 years, and the significance of UM for the Limburg region.
Book
Bart Zwegers recently published a book in which he tells the story of UM through 50 objects. He unearthed them from every nook and cranny. Some items had been hidden from view for a long time, gathering dust in faculty attics or dark basements. Read more in this interview.
